Pupil charged over deadly school blaze

NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – A form one (Grade 8) student has appeared in court for allegedly setting alight a school in Kenya, killing nine pupils.
The student, who cannot be named as she is a minor, has appeared before the Milimani juvenile court east of the country, days after the inferno at the Moi Girls High School in the capital Nairobi.
Prosecutors said owing to the public anger that has trailed the incident, the girl would remain in custody to ensure her safety.
Among items police have confiscated from the alleged mastermind is her mobile phone and laptop computer, which are now central to investigations.
Minister of education, Fred Matiang’I, blamed arson for the weekend fire that razed the school of over 1 000 pupils.
Seven pupils died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries later in hospital.
“We are saddened by the loss,” the minister said.
The fire in Moi Girls High School is the latest in a series of fires that have razed local schools lately.
It is reported some 100 schools were torched last year in the East African country that has suffered conflict in the aftermath of a divisive elections in August.
Students have mostly been charged as perpetrators.
