BUJUMBURA, (CAJ News) – PANIC has gripped Burundi after the emergence of an unknown eye illness.
At least 23 people have been affected by the disease northwest of Burundi, particularly from Gatura Hill in Bubanza commune.
According to health officials, the disease was different from the commonly called “amaso yimbwa” (eyes of the dog) which causes continuous blushing of the eyes.
Locals are worried by the scourge and appealed for the intervention o government.
Bubanza Medical District Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ezekiel Vyimana, asked all victims affected by the disease to contact the healthcare facilities for treatment.
The outbreak of the mysterious disease comes amid a deadly outbreak of malaria that has killed more than 1 000 Burundians from over 2 million cases since the beginning of the year.
An epidemic was declared in March.
In 2016, the World Health Organisation confirmed more than 3 800 deaths from more than 8 million cases of malaria.
The East African country of 11 million is also experiencing conflict after President Pierre Nkurunziza controversially retained power despite the expiry of his mandate in 2015.
Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee.
