NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – SEXIST comments made by a governorship candidate against her rival for the country’s capital region have sparked a furore in Kenya.
Miguna Miguna, a former aide to opposition leader Raila Odinga, made the comments on live television, directing them to Esther Pasaris. The pair is eyeing the Nairobi seat in the polls set for August.
In the controversy-laden show, openly mocked her as a woman with no integrity and a socialite bimbo whose only claim to fame was dating billionaire sponsors.
“You are so beautiful; everybody wants to rape Pasaris,” added Miguna.
Miguna has come out in defence alleging Pasaris had earlier on called him a rapist during a commercial break.
Human Rights Watch slammed Miguna.
“It is outrageous that Miguna, who aspires to be a political leader who will bear responsibility for addressing violence against women, would publicly joke about the rape of the woman running against him.”
The controversy has raised debate about the treatment of women in the country.
According to the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, 45 percent of women ages 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, and 14 percent have experienced sexual violence.
