NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – THE safety of learners in Kenyan schools is again
under the spotlight following the arrest of a Form Four (Grade 11) scholar for possessing an illegal firearm.
The 17-year-old has been arrested in Homa Bay County west of the country.
Police allege he used the gun, which he claimed to be a gift from a
relative in the United States, to extort money and food stuffs from fellow
students.
“The student first denied that he was in possession of the gun but after a
two-hour interrogation, he led police officers to a nearby bush where he
had hidden the weapon,” said Esau Ochorokodi, provincial police head.
“He hid the weapon outside the dormitory and only retrieved it when he
wanted to coerce fellow to submit to his demands.”
The student is to be charged with illegal possession of an unlicensed
firearm.
Ochorokodi warned parents to store their firearms carefully to avoid
youngsters accessing them.
Last week, a female learner was arrested for allegedly starting the fire
that burnt nine students to death at the Moi Girls High School in Nairobi.
