SAP Skills for Africa’s SA edition resumes

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE South African chapter of the 2016 edition of the SAP Skills for Africa, a skills development and job creation  initiative by the market leader in enterprise application software, has begun in Johannesburg.

The edition kicked off with student orientation that preludes the actual training due to start on Thursday.

There has encouraging endorsement of the skills development and training initiative with Johannesburg partners such as EOH, Accenture, Eskom, Zimele Technologies, T-Systems, Britehouse, Bosch, Clariba Solutions, Cosnet, Cornastone and MICT SETA pledging to take successful graduates into internships post completion of this leg of the training.

The new Johannesburg chapter represents the biggest graduate intake to date with 100 graduates embarking upon the SAP Skills for Africa ICT and soft skills training.

Ebrahim Laher, Managing Director at EOH SAP is excited with the company’s involvement and what SAP Skills for Africa delivers.

“The problem is not a shortage of jobs, but a lack of skills. Local skills pools define how competitive and effective a market is, so supporting SAP Skills for Africa is not about being a ‘nice’ company; it is to secure our future prosperity. As such there is no compromise on the quality of student outcomes – and EOH,” said Laher.

T-Systems also hailed the initiative.

Shubna Harilal, Acting Vice President: Systems Integration at T-Systems, said the company’s customers stake their future on technology investments paying off.

“That requires a healthy market, defined by the talent available. South Africa has no shortage of talent, but those need to be converted to reliable skills. I’m happy to say SAP Skills for Africa delivers on that challenge,” she said.

Another key partner is Eskom, whose Chief Information Officer and Group Executive Sean Maritz, said partnerships with the private sector were becoming increasingly important for enablement and development of core skills and resources across a multitude of industries.

“We have everything to gain through these vital partnerships with initiatives such as Skills for Africa,” said Maritz.

Setjhaba Moloyi, Accenture South African Delivery Centre Managing Director, concurred.

“The initiative creates skilled-graduates of the highest quality, which means we can continue to offer our customers the highest levels of skilled services,” said Moloyi.

Through the Skills for Africa, which SAP started in Kenya in 2013 and later extended to Morocco and South Africa, aims to create 10 000 jobs for young graduates across Africa by 2020 by providing SAP-relevant ICT training and placements in collaboration with governments, the public and private sectors and civil society.

Lawrence Kandaswami,Managing Director for SAP South Africa, said the initiative would bridge the digital education gap in a developing economy as South Africa’s.

“What SAP sees is a vast gap between the education that young people are receiving and what the employment market needs and this is where SAP Skills for Africa is increasingly making its unique value-proposition known,” said Kandaswami.
