NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYAN athletes are demanding diplomatic passports to avoid alleged harassment and humiliation at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The world-renowned athletes alleged the treatment they received at the facility upon their return from global competitions was frustrating.
The athletes also complained of prohibitive taxes imposed at the airport each time they returned home international duty.
Amid the grievances, Elgeyo Marakwet County Governor, Alex Tolgos, has come out in support of the athletes, suggesting they be given diplomatic passports to ease their movement around the world and avoid high taxes.
Tolgos said he received several complaints from athletes being harassed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
“It has been really hard for our good ambassadors to operate or get their visas and that is why we need them to be issued with the diplomatic passports.
“The athletes are also being frisked at various airports and their gifts including training kit among other things were being taxed. Some of the things they come back with are not for sale but meant to help the rising talent,” Tolgos said.
He said this while welcoming victorious marathon winners Mary Keitany and Stanley Biwott, who prevailed in New York Marathon, USA recently.
